This essay requires you to include all the following:
Introduction (300 words)
Introduce the essay topic:
A discussion of the benefits from Sustainable tourism practices on tourist destinations – is sustainable tourism achieving sustainability goals or facing obstacles and shortcomings?
To provide the discussion, you should
i. Provide an overview of the aims of the essay,
ii. Provide a definition of Sustainable tourism and its core principles.
iii. Comment on the urgency to implement Sustainable tourism practices.
First core section (500 words)
Evaluate various negative impacts of tourism on tourist destinations – to what extent do negative impacts outweigh positive ones and jeopardise the overall wellbeing of the destinations?
To provide the evaluation, you should
i. consolidate research evidence, statistical data and examples to showcase why sustainable tourism is needed for the tourism industry,
ii. categorise them into economic, socio-cultural, and environmental impacts.
iii. Provide examples of destinations or businesses that have successfully adopted sustainable tourism practices.
In addition to research evidence, statistical data, and examples from specific destinations, students are also expected to apply relevant theories and concepts (e.g., Butler’s tourism lifecycle (1980)).
Second core section (500 words)
Evaluate positive impacts of sustainable tourism on tourist destinations – what are the collective impacts of sustainable tourism to the overall wellbeing of tourist destinations?
To provide the evaluation, you should
i. Explain the three dimensions of sustainable tourism: economic, socio-cultural, and environmental,
ii. Identify and describe at least five key sustainable tourism practices. These may include eco-friendly accommodations, responsible wildlife viewing, community engagement, sustainable transportation, waste management, and cultural sensitivity.
iii. Discuss the environmental, economic, and socio-cultural benefits associated with each practice.
iv. consolidate research evidence, statistical data, and examples from specific destinations to showcase costs and benefits of sustainable tourism on tourist destinations.
Third core section (400 words)
Evaluate the costs of sustainable tourism and anticipate its future development:
What are the obstacles to develop sustainable tourism? What are possible scenarios of its future development?
For this evaluation and anticipation, you should
i. explain the central role of stakeholders in sustainable tourism, the importance of their involvement & their cooperation in promoting sustainable tourism practices. Explain the role of 3 stakeholders,
ii. identify costs of sustainable tourism. Will there be a loss of revenue for tourist destinations? Is it costly to implement sustainable tourism practices?
iii. Highlight the potential challenges or barriers to implementing these practices.
In addition to research evidence, statistical data, and examples from specific tourist destinations, students are also expected to apply relevant theories and concepts (e.g., stakeholder theory, Doxey’s Irridex model, (1975)).
You may draw research findings from academic studies as well as industrial reports.
Conclusion (300 words)
Give conclusive remarks:
Consolidate your key findings and give overall conclusive remarks – Offer recommendations for tourism stakeholders (e.g., governments, businesses, travelers) on how to promote and enhance sustainable tourism practices in nature.
To provide the remarks, you should
i. pick several key (NOT all) findings, defending your choice by explaining their importance,
ii. comment on the urgency to address these issues now.
