Hello, I am working on a biomedical (mechanical aspect) design project to create an attachment for manual wheelchairs aimed at reducing musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and shoulder pain in users of repetitive propulsion movements. The focal point of this project I have in mind is the development of a prototype lever-driven ratchet attachment, similar to the one in the attached image, but enhanced with a telescopic pole for better performance and user comfort. —————————————————————————————————————
(1) I need guidance on the following aspects of the telescopic pole design, not limited to:
– Optimal Grip Diameter: What should be the ideal diameter size for the pole’s grip to maximize comfort and ensure a firm hold? (maybe look at existing standard wheelchair grip handle sizes used for pushing the wheelchair?)
– Pole diameter: May probably be the same size as the grip diameter?
– Grip Material: Considering the stresses and ergonomic requirements, which materials would be suitable for the grip that will aid in reducing the recruitment moment for shoulder muscles?
– Pole Material: Consider the bending stresses, moment of recruitment for shoulder muscles, and strength. I was thinking of carbon fiber be the best choice for the pole material considering the balance between weight and strength, or are there better alternatives?
– Adjustable Pole Length: How should I determine the range of pole length adjustments to cater to various user heights and arm lengths?
– Locking Mechanism (important): What type of locking mechanism would be reliable and user-friendly for securing the pole’s length?
– And other considerations for the design!
** when doing research and designing, please elaborate as to why you chose this measurement, material, locking mechanism, etc. (for example, i chose this specific grip diameter because most standard wheelchairs have this grip diameter, etc.)

(2) This device is intended to alleviate musculoskeletal strain for manual wheelchair users. To progress with the project, I require a comprehensive design that can be translated into a CAD model, particularly for 3D printing purposes.
I seek your expertise in developing either a detailed CAD model or an in-depth sketch that incorporates all necessary components for a fully functional telescopic pole. Specifically, the design should include at least:
Inner Tubes: Please provide a detailed representation of the inner tubes, including their interior structure and how they will extend and retract. Illustrate the telescopic action and how the different sections will interact.
Locking Mechanism: An essential feature is a robust locking mechanism. I need to understand its operation, whether internal or external, and how it will securely maintain the pole’s length when adjusted. Please include a detailed visualization of the mechanism, showcasing how it engages and disengages.
Handle Design: The handle should be ergonomic, facilitating a comfortable and secure grip. Detail the materials, shape, and any textures or contours that will enhance the user’s grip.
Attachment Points: Depict how the pole will attach to the wheelchair frame, ensuring the method is both secure and allows for easy detachment when necessary.
Etc.
The design must be precise and detailed, with every component clearly defined and dimensioned, allowing me to grasp the assembly and functionality thoroughly. The goal is to have a clear guide for constructing a prototype.
I would greatly appreciate it if the design could showcase both the internal and external mechanisms, providing a 360-degree view of the entire assembly. This will be crucial for understanding the integration of parts and for the subsequent 3D printing process. Thank you! 🙂

THINGS TO NOTE:
– Attached in the files are some additional information regarding my project so far. Please look into the functional requirements table to see what are the necessary requirements for this prototype (weight requirement, price, accessibility, etc). – Since there are lever-driven wheelchairs existing in the market right now. But they are too expensive and involve redesign of a wheelchair. However, Im developing our own prototype (the wheelchair lever driven ratchet attachment) and we need to consider why our telescopic pole is better than existing solutions. – This is a student college senior design project, so consider pricing, complications, etc.
