As an elementary teacher, you are responsible for fostering inclusion and awareness around the many ways your students may be diverse. One way of doing this is to ensure that you are providing children’s literature that appropriately represents the diversity of your students.
For this assessment, you will create a presentation to communicate the importance of using literature to provide an understanding of diversity and multiple perspectives in the elementary classroom.
Scenario
Assume you are a veteran teacher, and your administrator has requested that you present at the next teacher in-service day on the topic of using literature to deepen students’ understanding of diversity and offer new and/or different perspectives for students to consider.
Preparation
To prepare for this assessment, review the “Diversity in Multicultural and Global Literature” section of Ch. 5, “Learning About Diversity Through Literature,” of your textbook. Focus your review on the following:
Trends and issues with children’s literature that features the experiences of underrepresented diverse groups of people.
“A Beginning List of U.S. Authors and Illustrators of Diverse Literature”
Assessment Deliverable
Use the Diversity in Literature Presentation Template and create a 10- to 12-slide presentation in which you communicate important information about using literature to provide a deeper understanding of diversity and multiple perspectives to the staff at your school.
Include the following information with supportive examples from your research for each section. While a certain number of slides are provided in the template, you can add additional slides for each header, as needed.
Introduction
Identify the topic, purpose, and audience for your presentation.
Diversity in Literature Importance
Describe the importance of diversity in literature, including what is meant by the following phrases:
Books as mirrors
Books as windows
Books as sliding glass doors
Current Trends and Issues
Describe the current trends and issues related to children’s literature that feature the experiences of individuals who are diverse in the following ways:
People of color
Ability
Gender identities and sexuality
Language
Religion
Book Selection Criteria
Describe the specific criteria you will use to select diverse literature for your classroom. Ensure that your criteria is for all types of diversity, and not just for selecting multicultural literature.
Conclusion
Explain the importance of using and providing diverse literature in the elementary classroom, including:
How it helps students understand diversity
How it helps students see new and different perspectives
As part of your presentation, you will create a 1-page handout for the participants in which you:
List 1 to 2 children’s books that support each type of diversity discussed in your presentation.
Include a brief justification of why the book was selected and how it supports understanding of diversity and multiple perspectives.
Include a reference slide in your presentation and cite all sources according to APA guidelines.
