Essay Three: Personal Reportage
– Write a personal reportage essay about the National Association of Social Workers (NASW)
-A piece of nonfiction requiring research and personal investigation
-This topic should interest you, but should be something that you do not know intimately
-This essay will stem from personal perspective on the topic, but will move away from purely personal writing to incorporate a somewhat objective understanding of the larger world around us
Researching
-You should use 4 outside sources for this essay:
-1 primary source (research that you initiate and carry out by observation or immersion)
-3 secondary research sources (research that someone else has carried out and presented as a study, article, book, or video)
-The primary source will be attending (watching) “Social Impact Horizon: Navigating Grand Challenges in Social Work”
-The link for this video is posted on the NASW website:
https://www.socialworkers.org/Careers/NASW-Career-Center/Resources-for-Students/Social-Work-Student-Events
-The actual video is posted on Youtube:

-This video will act as the primary source for this essay
-This primary source is considered observation and immersion
-For this type of research, you must participate in and observing your topic
-Keep your eyes and ears open for information about relationships and conflicts these participants might experience with each other, and stories that are part of the culture
-An essay of this type will demonstrate for your reader the motivations and feelings of those involved in the activity, culture, or organization you investigate
-You can incorporate scenes and conversation, along with research you do online or in publications for background, history, and factual information.
-The secondary sources can be any credible and reliable research that someone else has carried out and presented as a study, article, book, or video.
Drafting
– Interweave facts with experience
-Draw on scene-setting to help your readers get to know the world you’ve explored
-Your task is to plunge your readers directly into the story you’re telling, to help them understand the subject more deeply, and to guide them toward the truth you have drawn from it.
-Have I told a story that unites facts, memories, and interpretations into a reportage on a particular truth of a time, place, event, or person?
-Is my order and organization the most logical and effective in guiding the reader through the experience?
-Does my story offer readers a blending of the factual and remembered information into something unique?
-Draw heavily on creative and stylistic techniques
Minimum page length: 6-10 pages.
